Under the Mango Tree
One April afternoon,
where no words are needed to describe how hot it is,
a girl brings her new book outdoor with her to read in a hammock under the mango tree.
True, that it’s still a sunny afternoon.
True, that it’s a day in April.
But
she just can’t resist the urge and temptation of the hammock under this mango tree,
especially when a gentle breeze slowly whiffles – just like a special gift of the season.
Even in the heat, there’s still some cool to be felt.
Even in the afternoon, there’s still some coziness from a swaying hammock.
While the girl’s having her attention fixed to the little letters in her hand and enjoying the cool breeze, she’s a certain object surprisingly falls onto her body.
At that moment, when she’s lying in the hammock with her face upward the big tree, she knows it can’t just be anything else beside the fruit of mango for had it been just a leaf she wouldn’t have felt the weight as much, or had it been the branch she would have hurt much more.
It is in fact a mango when she looks down to the ground.
She says to herself “Lucky it missed my head”
She tells herself that she’s lucky
The girl thinks so
because if she lies under the mango tree, she risks having some parts of the mango tree fall on her. It would have been luckier if the fallen mango missed her completely but the thudding noise of it hitting the ground would have surprised her nonetheless.
Perhaps such is the way of life.
While the girl were enjoying herself, there may be something to disrupt her joy and upset her – depending on the degree of such disruption.
And while what she chooses to do may come with a risk, by weighing the happiness she would get in return she will know if she should keep reading under the mango tree and have the wind graze past her or she should close her book and do something else – or just move to read somewhere else.
Perhaps such is the way of life.
The girl is not so sure. She only knows that the wind that’s blowing is making her eyes too heavy to get up from the hammock under this mango tree right now.
